Overextend

The eye for a bargain by the team at Aaron Bain Racing is paying a big dividend with former New South Wales galloper Overextend.

The six-year-old, which cost just $17,000 has picked up $63,350 in stakemoney from just four starts this preparation for trainers Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor.

Overextend gave the trainers a winning double at Morphettville Parks on Saturday, March 22 when he finished best to win the Hahn Handicap (1000m).

Backed from $5 into $3.80, Overextend was perfectly ridden by apprentice Taylor Johnstone to score a half-length win from Been Our Angel ($16) with Volcanic Express ($2.15 fav) a neck away third.

A barrier one draw was perfect for the gelding as he was able to sit third on the fence behind the leaders Been Our Angel and Secret War.

Johnstone kept Overextend in a good rhythm even when Been Our Angel shot away early in the home straight.

The gelding steadily gathered in the front runner taking the lead 50 metres from home and winning well.

Trainer Aaron Bain said today’s double gave the trainers at least one winner for the past eight metropolitan Adelaide meetings.

“It has been a really good start to 2025,” Bain said.

“We wanted to pride ourselves on this year.

“This is the eighth straight metro and another double today which is really nice.

“Overextend has done well to win. He will get up in the ratings which will make it difficult to place him.

“He will go through to one of these heats and finals series.

“Overextend came to us and we gave him a couple of starts but he was actually up for 11 months.

“It is not something we typically do when we buy these tried horses, we like to spell them.

“We were on the borderline whether we put him back online and we gave the owners the option to say whether to stay in him and give him a spell.

“We tipped him out then brought him back training at Angaston Park and he has won two in town, he has had a great prep.”

Winning jockey Taylor Johnstone said Overextend had been impressive.

“He jumped well as he always does,” Johnstone said.

“He travelled beautifully throughout the run.

“I just waited for the right splits to come, and he overcame them late.

“It was a really nice win by him.”
