Pacific Jewel indicated she was a mare of potential making the tough step to go from a maiden win to a ratings race victory at Morphettville Parks on Saturday, March 15.
Her victory in the SkyCity Handicap (1550m) brought up a double for trainers Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor who had won earlier with Dubai Focus.
Apprentice jockey Taylor Johnstone had Pacific Jewel away nicely and settled the mare just behind the speed in the run to home turn.
On straightening, she brought the mare to the centre of the track and Pacific Jewel ($13 into $7) slowly but surely gathered in the leaders eventually scoring by a half-length from Beautiful Jewel ($16) with The Golden Fist ($2.70 fav) a head away third.
The four-year-old mare had scored her maiden win at Naracoorte on February 16 and did a great job to win a Rating 0-62 at Morphettville Parks.
Trainer Ned Taylor said he was not surprised Pacific Jewel made the step up from maiden grade.
“Credit to the team, they are doing a fabulous job getting these horses fit and well,” Taylor said.
“Congratulations to Geoff Evans from Western Australia who owns Pacific Jewel.
“He actually had the quinella today and we couldn’t be more appreciative for trusting us with his horses. It is lovely to get results for him.
“We have always had a nice opinion of Pacific Jewel.
“First up here she got taken right off the track so that was no guide.
“With our horses, it is not proving too big a step up to go from Naracoorte to the city if you place them right.
“The tight tracks can be tricky, but Taylor (Johnstone) had ridden her very well.
“The last 50 metres today Pacific Jewel really gritted her teeth and stuck her nose out when it counted.
“There is not much of the mare, but she has a crack.”
Winning jockey Taylor Johnstone believes Pacific Jewel can continue through the grades.
“She was super today,” Johnstone said.
“Jumped well and travelled really sweetly.
“The nice tempo gave her the chance to relax beautifully.
“In the straight she gave a really nice kick, so it is definitely onwards and upwards.”
