Bakeel

Former Singapore galloper Bakeel made it two from two in Australia with another excellent victory, this time at Murray Bridge on Saturday, March 8.

The four-year-old was sensationally backed from $1.60 into $1.30 favourite in the Happy 75th Phil Fitzsimmons Benchmark 76 Handicap (1400m) on the strength of his first up win at Morphettville.

Jockey Manoel Nunes had Bakeel away well and settled just off the speed in the field of 11.

Turning for home, the leader Nasho ($16) sprinted strongly and gave the favourite something to chase.

Bakeel extended over the final 200 metres and reeled in the leader scoring eased down by a length from Texas Windstorm ($26) with Nasho holding on for third, 1-1/2 lengths away.

Trainer Aaron Bain said Bakeel had come up very short with punters for today’s race.

“I was pretty nervous about him because he was such a short price,” Bain said.

“When they are that price you want to see them come out and get the job done.

“He won really well.

“He got a nice run in transit, Manoel gave him an 11/10 nursed him into it and he let down nicely.

“The leader kicked and gave him something to chase today but good horses find a way to win.

“We are very grateful to Mansoor Ghandi, Bakeel’s owner, not knowing us, but through our Bloodstock Manager Barend Vorster, to put his faith in training his horses and do justice by them.

“The City of Adelaide Handicap over 1500 metres will be his target through the SA carnival but there are plenty of options for him.”

Winning jockey Manoel Nunes said there was no reason why Bakeel couldn’t win in better grades.

“This guy (Bakeel) has done everything right,” Nunes said.

“I think the break he had between Singapore and coming here has made him a different horse.

“The gate today was a good barrier, and he travelled beautifully for me.

“He was a comfortable winner.

“Bakeel is a real professional, he is the type of horse you can put anywhere.

“Today, at 1400 metres from a good barrier, he was able to settle closer.

“I would like to say thank you to the owner.

“It was great for him to bring the horse over and have success – we got the job done.”
