Navy Gold

A brilliant ride by top jockey Jason Holder enabled Navy Gold return to the winning list at Oakbank on Thursday, February 13.

After having no luck at his previous run at Murray Bridge, Holder gave Navy Gold a perfect run in the Harcourts Adelaide Hills Benchmark 56 Handicap (1400m).

At the finish, the four-year-old, a $4 chance, had a long head to spare from Heidi Heidi Ho ($6) with Bulls On Parade ($2.20 fav), a head away third.

Navy Gold began well, and Holder was able to let him stride through to trail the leader in the run down the hill.

He angled off turning for home and the gelding chimed in to grab an advantage.

While Navy Gold didn’t charge away, he still did enough to win convincingly.

Holder said Navy Gold had tended to switch off over the final stages.

“I would have been dirty if I had run second,” Holder said.

“We had it won, and he just floated when he hit the front.

“He just switched off but when the pressure came he really responded.

“He jumped out of the gates nicely, and got down the hill good, and we had a nice run in transit.

“Will (O’Malley), race analyst for Aaron Bain Racing, told me where to be and it worked out nicely.

“He just got a bit lost the last 100 metres but did enough to win.

“He got the right run today and it worked out nice.”

Holder said he was happy to be building a strong association with Aaron Bain Racing.

“It is really good, Aaron (Bain) and Ned (Taylor) are good to ride for.

“I am enjoying the relationship we have at the moment, and obviously I have got to get winners to pay them back.

“They are good to ride for and have their horses well prepared.”

Trainer Aaron Bain praised Holder for Navy Gold’s win.

“That was a peach by Stubby,” Bain said.

“It was a perfect race for Navy Gold, and he got the win.

“He was third up, was very unlucky last time, drew well and it all came together.

“Navy Gold has always shown potential, he has just taken a while to get it all right.

“We will look for a nice Benchmark 58 for his next run.

“If he can win there maybe we can look for a suitable city race.

“With three wins and two placings from just 11 starts he is starting to build a handy resume.”
