El Capony wins

Talented mare El Capony won her first race for Aaron Bain Racing at the metropolitan Murray Bridge meeting on Saturday, January 18.

Trained by Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor, El Capony scored a short half head win in the SpryCrete Handicap (1200m), a benchmark 66 event.

Ridden by Manoel Nunes, the five-year-old mare, a $4.20 chance, held off Holmes ($14) with Lucky Fortuna ($11), a long neck away third.

El Capony began nicely but settled in midfield before being asked to improve turning for home.

Nunes switched his whip into his left hand to try and keep the mare straight in the run to the finish.

She always looked likely to win but had to withstand a late dive by the runner up.

Form students would have noted that at her first run for ABR, El Capony had run second to Episodic at Morphettville in May last year, and that horse had won the first race at Murray Bridge today.

Trainer Aaron Bain said El Capony had been hard work but deserved her victory.

“We have had a few headaches with her,” Bain said.

“She has been a bit of a handful at home and really tested us.

“Last start she loomed to win well but could only finish fourth. In her defence, she pulled a shoe with 150 metres to go.

“She has been a work in progress, providing Ned and I and the owners a lot of challenges.

“Today is a great reward for the patience of the owners.

“She certainly was deserving of winning a metro race.

“The instructions to Manoel were to give himself plenty of room in the home straight and have the whip in the left hand because she will want to hang in.

“She does want to lay in, and credit to Nunes, he is a good rider for those type of horses.

“Hopefully she can go on and win a few more.”

Winning jockey Manoel Nunes said El Capony did not help herself over the final 200 metres.

“She doesn’t want to pass horses in the home straight,” Nunes said.

“She wanted to hang in really badly.

“I couldn’t ride her out properly, I was just trying to make her go straight.

“I used the whip in my left hand, but she was good enough to put her head in front at the finish.

“I had to stop riding and correct her close to home which enabled the runner up to get very close.”
