High Garden

Promising mare High Garden finished best to grab a photo-finish win at Murray Bridge to start 2025 in winning style.
A maiden winner at her previous run for trainers Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor, High Garden stepped up to benchmark 56 company to win the Carlton Draught Handicap (1400m).

Ridden by apprentice Taylor Johnstone, the four-year-old mare, a $5 chance, ran home strongly to grab a last stride nose win over Loca Bella ($3.40 fav) with Tick Tock Boom ($10) a head away third.

Coming from barrier eight, High Garden was caught wide midfield but answered to Johnstone’s riding to finish best and claim victory.

Former champion jockey Barend Vorster, who celebrated his 48 th birthday a day earlier, spoke on behalf of Aaron Bain who was on strapping duties.

“We are happy she stuck her head out at the right time,” Vorster said.

“High Garden is owned by my good friend Wayne Mitchell, so well done to him. I think he is watching from a boat at Airlie Beach in Queensland.

“This mare came from New South Wales and took a while to find her feet but Wayne is quite positive she will get up in distance.

“We’ve kept her at the 1400 (metres) for the moment but the boys will take it step by step.

“Hopefully, this win has been a positive start for the season after a number of seconds towards the end of last year.

“Taylor gave her a nice ride and got some good cover into the wind and produced
her late.”

Winning jockey Taylor Johnstone believes High Garden can continue to improve.

“To my mare’s credit she was really strong, she was massive,” Johnstone said.

“It was a bit of a messy run race, but she held herself pretty well.

“From a sticky gate she began quite well but we were three wide with and without cover early.

“To her credit, she knuckled
